I am from the Mid-West of Ireland.
Peoples opinions differ...some will say they are heros, others will say that they are terrorists.
The original IRA won us our freedom and enslavement from Britain back in the 1920s, we finally got our Irish Free State (except the 6 counties in the north)
But the civil rights moment in the 70s sparked up the conflict between the IRA and the Ulster Unionists.
The Protestants controlled the north. The passed this law where catholics had barely no rights, they lived in poverty and were thrown into jail left, right and center.
Basically the IRA hit an all-time low. They were desperate and started bombing. There was much blood shed on both sides. It even went as far as London and during the 80s (when we were in an economic depression) many Irish had moved to England in search of work.
It got ugly. I suggest you read up about the Birmingham 6 (the British police jailed 6 Irish men for the bombing and killing of English, but they were innocent men)
But now, the conflict is over. Peace is now between the north and south (hopefully for a long time)
To answer your question- I understand what the IRA was trying to achieve but I do not approve of the blood split between the 2 sides..

I live in the north. The IRA is the paramilitary wing of Sinn Fein (apparently). Before the peace process, it was awful for everyone, as there was a bomb 1 day, then retalliation, then more , and so on....
but now, Sinn fein are working with the british and are reaching compromise, therefore they dont actually bomb, as sinn fein dont want to.
But there are people who are not happy that Sinn fein has colluded with the british, and they have broken away and formed a splinter group the Real IRA or (R)IRA/ RIRA.
There are no bombs or shootings of policemen or anything, but you do get the occasional bomb scare - 1 on thursday last week.

this question won't be able to be replied properly as a results of bitter divide that still exists between nationalist Irish and the loyalist Unionist peoples that inhabit eire. For the checklist besides the undeniable fact that, it may be suggested that the bigotry and indifference that replaced into exercised as a political coverage by the Unionist Parliament in Belfast and their consistent refusal to handle Catholics as equivalent to themselves is the foremost clarification why the IRA replaced into reborn in 1960's eire. certainly, if that they had in basic terms the braveness or foresight or intelligence to handle the Catholic inhabitants as equals and meet them one million/2-way the IRA, might never have succumbed to the phobia it back on their Unionist enemies. Even in nationalist aspects of Ulster the IRA, replaced into standard as I Ran Away in the previous the concerns took result. The Unionists lit the torch that ignited Northern eire and gasoline replaced into extra to the fireplace on Bloody Sunday. Outrage, homicide and atrocity replaced into achieved besides the undeniable fact that it replaced into no longer all one sided. modern comments state that Britain's bloody hands are additionally in contact in this conflict. The question is what procedures have been used, a similar procedures that have been utilized in Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Vietnam and at the instant Palestine and Iraq. The procedures of guerrilla war. The bomb, the bullet, the killing and maiming of innocents and the secret deadly video games that each and every person facets have been in contact in.The British media called them cowards and murderers, a lot of Irish people called them heroes. What ever one might call them relies upon on what fringe of the divide one comes from besides the undeniable fact that, what's of fee is that the British government. themselves suggested that militarily on my own they might never defeat them. The IRA additionally knew that a limiteless war of attrition replaced into additionally fruitless. the recent coverage may well be quasi-political, 'a pollbox in a single hand and an armalite in the different', this 2-dimensional assault ended in at the back of the scenes talks on the utmost stages on the two facets of the border and around the Irish Sea. The ensuing talks ended with the stop fireplace and the sturdy Friday contract.Has it worked, my own view is that it is been helpful for the IRA and Sinn Fein, its important political sponsor. They now have individuals of parliament in the two Northern eire and the Republic and likewise MEPs in the E.U. Open invites to ten Downing St. and the White abode, they have come alongside way.
