He is the highest figure in the catholic church. Therefore, he is treated as the nearest living thing there is to God. It's respect. If some see him as "God" they are wrong. He is the top religious leader in the Catholic faith & deserves the highest respect of those who are Catholic. If some see him as God, well, that doesn't make them bad or stupid. maybe they need to talk with their local pastor for clarification.

Oops. Wrong religion dude. The Pope is a highly respected positon. Catholics take pride that the pope succeeds their position dating all the way back to the days after Christ. The pope is not a deity. He is a leader of the faith.

Who are these Catholics? I never heard this from any Catholic and offical doctrine doesn't decree the Pope as a deity or God. Any Catholic who thinks this is crazy and is committing idolatry. You should do well not by listening to them.

"almost every catholic i have talked to thinks that the pope is god, "
My guess is that you have not talked to any Catholics. Either that, or you have serious problems understanding what Catholics say.

That would be absolute heresy. I've never met a Catholic who wouldn't be absolutely horrified at the suggestion. The Pope is a spiritual leader, but still quite mortal. They follow his leadership but they do not worship him or pray to him.

I find it very hard to believe that almost every Catholic you talk to would falsely tell you what Catholics believe.
Catholics do not think that the Pope is God. We believe is is our most senior pastor on Earth, the direct successor of Saint Peter (not Jesus Christ).
John 21:15-17 states:
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Matthew 16:17-19 states:
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.
The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 880-882: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect2chpt3art9p4.htm#880
With love in Christ.

Because a deity is better than a king. When you play power politics, small things matter and perception is not a small thing.
Oh, Wait! Religion isn't supposed to be power politics. What a conundrum.

I think they believe that pope is in fallible.
Reason is that they find lots of inconsistencies in bible and they should have some strong basis for religious knowledge. they can't trust bible because of errors so they take pope as infallibe

...The title "pope" is an ancient "pagan" title and has nothing to do with the proper worship of God... The Scriptures clearly show "that all have sin'd and fallen short of the glory of God", however, the Roman Church cleverly "skews" Gods Word in "papal bulls, dogma's and doctrines" to justify "their" religious gymnastics that hold their followers in religious bondage... The "pope" is a human and is not "infallable" as "they" so try to document... calling "anyone" a holy "father" is clearly a violation of Scripture (see Matthew, chapter 23 vs.9 and decide for yourself)... "they" chant over and over and over a prayer to a dead Hebrew girl that is clearly against Scripture..."no one comes to the Father except through Christ"...no one. (read John, chapter 14 vs.6 and decide for yourself)...
