My senior kitty does this. He just wants to be held and loved on for a little while, then when he is content he will hop down and go back about his business.

YES! At the most inopportune times, my Maddie will meowl (a cross between howling and meowing) at the top of her little lungs. She likes to do this in the morning about 45 minutes before my alarm goes off...just enough time so that going back to sleep is pointless.
She also does this if I'm not paying her enough attention.
lol.

Yep, mostly at 4:30 AM on the dot ... he just wants to play, invest in some toys and have a play together for half an hour or so, he'll soon be content with having a quiet cuddle!

Yes, usually if he sees another animal outside, or he wants to get into my bedroom in the middle of the night.
