An indentured servant is either working off a financial debt or was put there by the courts as punishment. They are to work until the debt or time is paid. I had a direct ancestor that was ordered by the Old Bailey in England to spend 10yrs as an indentured servant in the new colonies in New York. After the time was up he stayed here in America.

A slave is owned by someone and works until dead or freed.

Indentured servant has an agreement to work off his debt and then is free and clear to do as he wishes.
A slave has no say so about anything and is never free.
Most indentured servants came to america by getting a loan from a land owner in america. They then he would work the alloted time to pay back the loan through labor.

An indentured servant is so thru a contract and when the
terms of the contract are satisfied, the servant is free. Jesus
was, in effect, an indentured servant, thru His covenant, and
once the price was paid, His Life, He gained the eternal
life of his people & freedom from this world.
