More importantly than why we are fighting or what we are fighting for, is the question of who and what we are fighting.
Allegations of WMD and terrorism links aside, even if Saddam did have these things. He's gone now. He and his sons are dead. These are no longer valid reasons to stay in Iraq.
The Iraqi government has been established. They have their democracy.
So I ask 'progress'... well, progress towards WHAT? What plan towards obtaining this undefined goal? In what timeframe will this unplanned method be implemented to acheive the undefined goal?
At a certain point, one has to realize that the reason George W. Bush has not given the answers to these questions is that they are no answers to these questions. We are in Iraq fighting for, quite literally, nothing.
Whether the war was just or not or whether we are winning or losing is a moot point. We have nothing to fight for, nothing to win.
Screw Iraq, if they can't defend it.. they don't deserve to be free.

We stay in Iraq because Bush does not nor has he ever had an exit strategy. Why? Because if we are out of Iraq his buddies in the military industrial complex won't be able to make obscene profits and because he will have to address REAL issues confronting this country. He doesn't want to do that as he has no plan there either. Generally the neocon agenda is to move the country backward or at least keep a stalemate but now they are losing control and unable to tell him what to do and how to do it. So he thinks, too that his legacy as a war president will some how make him as great as Lincoln or FDR. Unfortunately for him he is not worthy to stand in the same room with those great presidents.

Interesting... Iraq has been an elevator for me. First it was fueled by hatred after 9\11 kill those bastards and let them know if they are going mess with us that we will BREAK THEM. After the hatred died down I thought why are we still there, we bomb them killed at least 10x more of them than they have killed us, its time to come home. Then talking with some imigrants, not from the middle east, they brought up a good point. This is the greatest place in the world. It our responcibility to help other people get what we have achieved. Then I thought... Great Britian didn't stick around until we got established. God has the answer, not us , however we have jepardized a lot of people now if we leave. They are counting on us not simply to protect the peace or government but their survival. Our people are getting killed, yes they are, there is a reason why war has been called HELL. Let them fix their own problems... simply because people can't get up doesn't mean we should step on them. It doesn't mean we should die for them either. Yes it does... they are our brothers even if they look and act differently. Then we are killing others aren't they our brothers? Yes however if you have two brothers fighting and one wants to kill the other... which one are you going to defend? We can't be the police for the world. I agree but we have put ourselves in this position and because we decided to control of it... we can't give up simply because it has become hard. What are we getting out of it? We are getting exactly what hell has to offer... pain. It is time to get out then... do you see a circle going on here?

We are fighting for PRIDE; Bush's and Cheney's pride.
There really is no reason to be in Iraq, except to try to fix what our original intervention in 2003 has caused.
Four and a half years later, we have been unable to do anything except cause unity among our foes, including Iran and Syria.
As the report on the "Splurge" leaked out today in the papers stated, the little good which was caused by the "Splurge" was outweighed by the casualties of innocent Iraqi citizens and US soldiers continually subjected to terrorist suicide bombers.
At some point, even Ford conceded it could not fix the Pinto.

Perhaps those permanent US Bases aren't quite finished and then again, Bush did want to go after the AXIS of so called evil. I believe he mentioned Iran in his speech in the beginning when he went after Iraq.

i'm not totaly sure why we are there anymore, i'm not even 100% sure why we invaded in the first place, it certainly wasn't to secure our freedom as that has never been threatened.
