There are quite a few other words we say as well that I can't type here! Ouch and Ow are learned through the English language.

i think it comes after the reflex reaction
like you instantly pull away from something because it hurts, then a second or two later your brain realises whats happened and that it really hurts and i suppose it then tells you to let it out

although i dont say ouch, i swear a lot!

its also comfort, like pain relief, it also seems to help if you kick the inanimate object that caused you pain

hmm maybe i'm just turning insane

Ouch is universal to humans
just said in other languages

for the same reason we call red flowers roses, or a meat patty on a bun a hamburger. Those are the words we have assigned for that specific instance. If you want to yell "Tunafish!" when you stub your toe the next time instead of saying 'ouch' then go right ahead.

Yes, I think so. I'm sure that other languages say some other word that expresses the same feeling of pain as we do.

i think it is just the first thing that cums to mind. in my lanuage we say ahh! so i guess it is only part of wat u hear somone else say. i mean i dont think ouch or ow is an american word i think it just became part of the language becuz so many ppl say it. it is a very interesting question u came up with tho.

to me- when i am in pain i cant just sit/stand there and take it in i need something to help me think of something other than pain. it is harder to explain when not talking face to face though.
