I suggest that you read Clausewitz, and I mean really read the whole book. War is not an end it is a means to an end. To quote Clausewitz. "War is merely the continuation of policy by other means" and "The political objective is the goal, war is the means of reaching it, and means can never be considered in isolation from their purpose". Its been said so many times in so many ways that force more that any other means has settled more issues in history than any other factor.
America has always been a republic, but it is a democratic one. So you get to vote for who you want to represent you in the government. Hence it is a democracy, but a representative one. Simple enough, no pretending involved that I can see.

The only people that think we are a pretend democracy are the people who failed high school social studies/government.

We are not a democracy, never have been.
Kind of silly to pretend that someone is pretending to be something when they never claimed to be that thing in the first place.

War is unavoidable.
We have limited resources. We will ALWAYS have limited resources. Even if we get into space and create matter transmutation we will STILL have some limited resources.

War is over actual or perceived limited resources.

The idea that everything can be solved another way is juvenile.

It's also essential. We need brakes and gas no matter what direction we are headed, and in those wars over perceived limits rather than actual, we need people to slow things down and put them into perspective.

But war will always exist.
The United States, however, works hard to limit it to military targets and help the countries rebuild afterward.

What country in the world does that!

war war war; force element; pretendin(d) democracy... thats pretty pathetic and ignorant....look back through history to the birth of the United States, even before we existed the place we call the middle east has been a haven for terrorists- it's sad that we waited until the largest terrorist attack in our nation's history to get up and find and destroy the terrorist networks. Now that we're in the fight we're also improving these countries; thousands of US soldiers are dying for the safety of our country and progress of the middle east....but this is what we hear "war war war, force element, pretendin(d) democracy"
You're probably the same hypocrite who wears a 'support our troops' ribbon but think their efforts are for nothing. Thanks alot.

War is not suitable if there is any other way of protecting ones country or other countries it has mutual defense treaties with. The problem is determining when there is in fact no other way. How many chances should Saddam be given to comply with the treaty that allowed him to remain in power in the 90's? What other means might have been used to get him to comply so we could be sure he wasn't developing WMD? I don't know the answers to that, but it turned out Bush should have tried more things before deciding to go to war (if he decided when he said he did. I can't read minds to know how truthful he was.)

Since wars keep happening in spite efforts to prevent them, I think the best option is to develop less lethal, but just as effective, weapons. The rules of engagement our forces follow for the most part, compared to the actions of bin laden's followers in Iraq, seem to have helped win allies among former insurgents. Maybe if our weapons had killed fewer Iraqis or no Iraqis, bin laden's people would have a harder time recruiting people to kill our troops.

As for "pretending democracy," even international critics of Bush's Iraq policy monitored the Iraqi elections and agreed that they were as fair and democratic as possible under the circumstances. Even insurgents decided to allow the vote to proceed, so I can't agree with what you imply in that regard.
