both of my papillons wear shirts and sweaters in the winter time. they just dont have that much body fat and they get cold easily. in fact, my boy has a shirt on right now to keep him from scratching because of his allergies.

If you are in the UK, there is a Charter now that says every owner must provide a dog with proper care, shelter, food, veterinary treatment when needed, etc.etc. So you could fall foul of this unless your dog is in a good insulated kennel, and probably the way the temperatures are going in the UK this week, with some other form of heating. Obviously if he's used to being out, he will probably have grown a thicker than normal coat which will help, but his bed should be up off the floor (bench), and free of drafts. And his water bowl must be ice-free during the day. If, as some Jackies can be, he's noisy out there, especially during the night, you could well be on the receiving end of complaints from neighbours too. Otherwise, much as I'm only in favour of dogs living other than in the home if they are working dogs, or in a kennel-set up (as in show-kennel) where there are numbers living together, I guess he's going to be okay. I'd not think a Jackie is necessarily an ideal outside dog. You may have to revise where he's living, at least overnight, when he gets old.

We started young making our dog wear shirts. He tolerates them, but doesn't really like them. Dogs generally don't need clothing unless they are hairless and you live in a cold climate. Dog clothing is just a thing we put them through to make them cute. If you want your dog to at least tolerate wearing clothing, put it on while he's young and have him wear clothes often. Practice changing in and out of shirts as sometimes their legs get in weird positions when doing so. As long as you are careful with him as a puppy and get him used to shirts as soon as you can, you will not irritate him.

It is fine. Also, some dogs do not have the coat for the colder weather. That's why coats and sweaters are made for dogs. It's only in the recent years that they started making the 'designer' look in coats and sweaters and making all the other novely clothing for the dogs. If you want to put something on your dog and the dog will wear it, go for it.

I have put little T-shirts on some of my rescued foster dogs that say, "Adopt Me".

It's OK, but only if it's freeeeezing outside. Otherwise your dog doesn't need a shirt, cause his fur makes him warm enough. Try to make it through cold weather without shirts, because your dog's body will get used to lower temperatures and chances of getting ill are also going to be very low.

If you get him used to it now he won't mind when he gets older. But really if it is too cold for his own coat to keep him warm the shirt wont help much. Our dog however liked to wear on and would bring one to be put on. Of course she associated it with going somewhere. Either a walk or car ride.

okay so like it depends on the dog. like i have a chihuahua and when it is cold i put a t-shirton her but like then i have this poodle and when it is cold i just let his hair grow longer (he doesnt shed) cuz i know he wont get cold also the size of the dog in my opinio i think smaller dogs should wear t-shirts(and older dogs) but when i go to buy shirts i would be pciky cuz like some of them are really uncomturable. and then make sure to get the right size.
hope this helps.

I would say the dog "shirt" is ok. My bigger concern is where did you get a 6 WEEK OLD PUPPY??? Reputable breeders wouldn't give them to you until they are a minimum of 8 weeks. They really need the socialization they get at that time. Did you buy it at a pet shop? If so, I would take it to a vet and keep a close eye on it for the first couple of years. Your really need to watch the dogs you get from pet stores more closely as far as medical concerns because they usually come from puppy mills. The pet shop may tell you it came from a "family" but usually they get them from brokers who usually get them from auctions or mills. Please take it to the vet if you haven't already!

Try the shirt, if the dog likes it then do it. Dogs have personalities, likes and dislikes. My female rottie just loves wearing clothes and hats and costumes, the lab mix refuses anything but collars and neckerchiefs but probably because of his thick coat.

If you are afraid of irritating your dog.. YOU my friend have big problems.. You MUST train your dog, whether it's leash training, or anything else.. Quit worrying about his feelings, and sign up for some classes.. If you keep trying NOT to irritate him, you are going to have an out of control wild maniac that not only do you not want to be around him, but no one else will either and he will be a huge liability.. Train him!
