Xanax doesn't stop itching. It's a depressant that is used to treat anxiety/panic disorders in HUMANS only. Think of how much bigger your body is than your dogs honey. I have a rx for Xanax and its ONLY .25MG and I only take half of it. I'm 5'5'' and 140lbs. If you're concerned about your dog you need to take the dog to the vet or call their emergency number. Xanan will kill a dog, their systems are not designed the way humans are.

No you cannot give Xanax to a dog without the vets say so. If your dog is itching then Xanax isn't going to help, go out and get him Benadryl tablets and give him two.

Additional Info: Just FYI dogs don't react to benedryl like humans do, were as one tablet will make us sleepy, it won't affect them like that, after my dog was spayed my vet suggested I give her benedryl to calm her down and slightly sedate her and in order to do that I had to give her four tablets and she was under 50lbs at 6 months. So two should be fine for a 115lb Rottie.

Don't give dogs human meds without first contacting your vet. (My vet told me that it's okay to give a child's dose of Benadryll, but again, ask your vet before doing this.)

Do you know WHY the dog is itching?

What are you currently feeding your dog? Low-quality foods containing animal by-products can cause dogs with sensitive skin to itch. Read the ingredients on the package. Higher quality foods are more expensive but well worth it.

How often do you bathe your dog? Bathing too often can strip natural oils from your dog's skin and cause her to itch. Their skin doesn't poduce oils in the same way that human skin does. You should only bathe your dog a couple times per year - unless she gets REALLY stinky. A good alternative to bathing is just using baby wipes periodically on her body. (Incidentally, feeding low-quality food as mentioned above can contribute to that stinky, "doggy" smell.)

Hope that helps!

Have you thought about trying to figure out what is causing the itching instead of just trying to treat it with drugs?

Does your dog have a food allergy? Fleas? Dry skin from being bathed too often? Talk to your vet about what could be CAUSING the itching.

Nooooooo!!!!!! Don't even think of giving a dog or other animal human medications for anything. Go to a pet store (large ones like Petsmart have sections with animal medications), there's probably a shampoo you can get for that. Or if that fails, consult the vet.

DO NOT GIVE THE DOG XANAX - Call your vet or local emergency Vet Clinic on the weekends.

NO!!! first of all xanax won't stop itching...but benadryl will. Check with your vet first, but more then likely she can take a whole one.

I wouldn't give a dog xanax unless she has a prescription for it - I'd go to a vet if I were you.

my dog (german shep) was having allergies and my vet had me give her Benadryl (the one with 25 mg Diphenhydramine as the only active ingredient) the vet told me to give her one pill every six hours for three days... but the one pill seemed to make her really drowsy so I gave her 1/2 a pill instead and that worked wonders!!... :)

Not xanax, but benadryl is ok. Call your vet before you give your animal anything though.
