The Catholic Church use to always speak in Latin, so that no one knew what was being said. They scared the people, telling them terrible things would happen if they did not come to their church, all the time. The only way they could learn about what they were so post to be believing was to become a priest or nun.
When the Bible was translated into local languages, new religions came to be because they found out the were not being taught what the Bible dose say.
A distant Granddaddy of mine family left the Catholic church and King Louie the 14th put a death order out on them. The escaped to Holland, then to America, and settled in Penn.

All non Catholic churches are classed as Protestant, these too have their squabbles and split up to form other churches with a different name, the response from the Catholic Church, I would imagine to be ex- communication. Perhaps a theologian can give a clearer answer.

The catholic church obviously didn't like it, mass killings etc. Henry the 8th decided to "form" protestantism purely because he wanted a divorce and the catholics wouldn't allow it.

The Protestants are considered heretics. Thousands were tortured and killed Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
Today as heretics, they are just excommunicated and condemned to hell for eternity but that's unpleasant only in the afterlife which is a fairy tale...

Read Fox's Book of Martyrs. The Catholic church killed anyone who didn't agree with their doctrines.

I know in Northern Ireland it was bad, however the other way around. Protestants would kill RC, follow them home, and kill their family. It was really sad, and even goes on a bit today.
