there should be a metal handle in the side of the flu pipe. it should be put in the same direction as the flu damper, horizontal is off and verticle is open. u can check this by lighting a peice of paper and placing it inside the fireplace if the room fills with smoke turn the handle and then it should be open and the smoke should go up.
some older models also have a heat generated damper if this is the case u will need to hold a peice of newspaper up in the flu area until it opens then start the fire.

I would suggest getting a Chimney Sweep to check the fireplace before using. There are a few different types of damper controls. Some are a handle on the front of the fireplace and some have a chain that hangs down inside the firebox. If the flue is exposed (round pipe going upwards) the damper probably has a handle on it and the direction of the handle is the same as the damper. Horizontal closed/verticle open.

Stick your head in the fireplace and look up into the flue. You should see a flap which when opened will allow you to see at least part of the way into the chimney or at least some daylite. The control is normally on the right hand side as you face the fire box. It may be a knob you turn or a handle you have to push. You could also light a cigarette or sheet of paper to see if the smoke rises.

If you can look up the chimney. You should be able to see the flue. When we move in this house I made an assumption on Christmas eve that the draft was open because I just had it checked. I was wrong and I had to call the fire department to come that night. Also call the fire department in your area and they will give you the right answer.

You should be able to see the flue damper handle by looking in the fireplace. Locate it and move it, to learn the "open" or "closed" position -- so you know how far it moves.

Light a piece of newspaper, holding it in the combustion chamber, with the lever in one position. If smoke starts to accumulate, move the lever to the other position.

congrats, welcome home

Some homes have fireplace(s) or woodburning stove(s) while some homes don't have any of them.

Build a fire and if the house fills up w/ smoke then it's not open.LOL There should be a handle of some sort. Do you have a neighbor whose house was built by the same builder? You could ask them.

Was it mentioned on any survey you had done?

If not, get professional advice. Even if it seems open to the untrained eye, it may be partially blocked or there may be some other hazard. With fire and smoke involved, the risks to property and life are not small.
