My left eye has 20/50 vision, while my right eye has 20/40. Does this mean I need corrective lenses? And if so, can you get contacts right away? I'm 12, if that makes a difference.

I think you will tend to get headaches from eye strain if you don't have some kind of corrective lenses. I think you can see without them well enough but you are straining your eyes.

I think contacts are a nuisance to use, to keep from dropping, and to keep from getting dirty or lost. If your vanity is strong enough get them but expect a nuisance with them.

You do indeed need corrective lenses. You are only 12, so your vision is probably just going to get worse (assuming you are nearsighted) until you are about 20-25. Being 20/40 to 20/50 is enough that it could cause you to have a hard time in class. Also, in most states, if you are cannot see 20/40 line perfectly, you will not be allowed to drive during night hours. Granted, you won't be driving for a long time, but I'm just telling you this now.

You may need glasses to just see far away (such as seeing the board at school, playing sports, or watching TV, movies, etc). I have one eye that is 20/50 and the other eye 20/25 or 20/30ish. I started out wearing glasses when I was around your age, but when I got older and went for my driving test, I could not pass the vision part without my glasses. This eventually led me to get contacts when I was 19 and I started out with just one contact in the weaker eye. It wasn't until a few years ago that I actually started having to wear two lenses. I think I am a -4.25 in the 20/50 eye and a -0.75 in the 20/25 eye.
(Minus numbers indicate nearsightedness or having difficulty seeing distance).

Contact lenses are an option, but you should probably wait and see if you really need to wear the glasses all the time or just for certain things before deciding. Either way, you want to have a pair of glasses just in case something goes wrong with your contacts or your eyes are bothering you and you can't wear them that day, etc.

I think you should definitely get some corrective lenses. If not your vision will get worse from the straining. I went through it when I was your age. When you turn about 25, you can go with the laser vision correction. You're too young for it now. When you get your prescription, your parents can order you contact lenses at great prices on http://www.seebetterlenses.info/.

Yes you need corrective lenses. The contacts depend on what your Doctor & parents say. If you do get contacts you will still need a pair of back up glasses for days when you have a cold, infection or are just too tired to mess with the contacts.

There would be too much of an imbalance if only one eye was corrected , so yes...you need a correction for both eyes. Presuming both eyes are healthy , you should be seeing 20/20 or better in both with glasses. No sense leaving one eye at 20/40 if it can be brought back to 20/20

Yes you need corrective lenses ,You can get glasses or contacts .but beware some people can`t wear contacts due to certain eye conditions and life styles etc ask your optician for what may best suit your eye problem.
Contacts can be hard to get used to and can cause more eye infections but the choice is up to you

I have pretty much the same thing. I have an Rx, but I haven't gotten around to getting lenses yet.

I would get them, you will be amazed with what you can see.

Yes you can get contacts right away, just let your opthamologist know you want them. I think you will be surprised at how much you are missing out on (can you see people's faces when they are standing 20 feet away??).

I remember the first time I put contacts in and I could see every single leaf on the tree outside. It was amazing!
