You write something like "I, *your name*, have received *dollar amount here*, from, *roommates name*. X dollars for a security deposit and X dollard were for his/her portion of rent. This was paid in cash to me on *date here*.

Writing A Receipt

I just went through this with my landlord. Basically what i wrote was like:

This receipt states that I, (your name) have received $amount as a security deposit from (your roommate's name) on 9/?.07. This deposit is refundable upon walk through and approval of rental space condition when (rommate's name) moves out according to the terms of the rental agreement. (if they have to give notice you should mention that the deposit can be held if they don't give enough time in advance.)

Write or type "received in cash from (roommate's name): $xxxx for security deposit, and $xxx for rent for the month of ......". Sign it and date it.

Greetings!

This is not legal advice, however, I would recommend you have at least the following:

Received from ___________________(their name typed or spelled out in neat writing)
The amount $__________________
Payment form ______________(CASH)
Date_______________ (the date you received the $)
Purpose______________(Rent, deposit, etc...)
Received By ________________ (your name typed or spelled out)

Then, YOU sign it and have THEM sign it. That should work. OR... you could go to an office supply store and buy a receipt book.

OR... if you have Microsoft Word, you could download a receipt template from Microsoft here:

I wish you Peace.
