i have some painted boards from an old house, want to paint some stenciled designs over them for decorative signs for a countryish look.

Most interior house paints now are acrylic latex. So Acrylic paints will adhere, as long as the area being painted is clean and dry. Use mild soap and water to wash the walls down. Once the wall surface is dry, apply your acrylic paint!

you should have very little challenges, as long as the surface is clean and dry.

You can use acryic over oil based but not the other way around.
