My puppy was just diagnosed with Kennel Cough and slight yeast in his ear. I didn't think that the oral meds would be too bad because he usually does not mind it, but these meds he will not even open his mouth and runs away. Cleaning and putting the meds in his ears is a workout. He totally freaks out! What can we do?

He will not sit still and I am concerned the amount of meds I am putting in him is not enough. Need help PLEASE!! I don't want my puppy sick anymore!

Put your fingers in the back of their teeth.. They will open their mouth, then put it in. If it's a pill.. they will probably struggle still, but if you hold his mouth shut they have to swallow.. I know you probably feel bad because your dog gets upset but your helping him like you would your child. The yeast thing has been a problem for my 15 year old boxer almost all of his life. Really try to do your best to get it cleared up totally now. Try not to get water in your dogs ears at all ever. He might be prone to this and it is a miserable situation for the dog and you. don't put it in hotdog, because hot dogs are not good for dogs, they do not digest it well.

What you do is sit down with him on your lap.. You take your finger and you slide it into the side of his mouth between his teeth.. Hold it there and he can't close his mouth.. Tip his head back, drop the medication straight to the back of his throat. Head still back, you close his mouth and you rub his throad in the downward direction.. Once he finally swallows.. He is done and you can let him go.

Ears.. have him on your lap.. Pull his ear flap straight up snuggly.. Not enough to hurt him but to have control over what he does.. With your other hand you put the cleaner down into his ear and you rub the base of his ear.. Pack a cotton ball down there to hold the medication in and do the other ear.. Pull the cotton ball out and voila, medication has had a chance to work, and ears are clean..

NOW give him a treat and make sure that you have made the whole thing a fun time thing, rather than a big fur flying sweaty ordeal!

I find that if I give my 9 year old a Bully Stick or a Chewey Treat she behaves better. Also, once you get the meds in her ear, treat her immediately after. That way she will learn that once it's over, she'll be rewarded. Good luck...my girl is squirmy too!

My old dog has to have oral medication every morning. I wrap the pills in butter and act like I'm giving her treats.

For the ear meds., try to do it at a time when the pup is fairly calm to begin with. Start by petting him and handling his ears (make sure to do this when it's not medicine time, too). Praise him and give him treats. Then gently hold him down, petting and praising him, while a helper quickly puts the medicine in. Keep your voice very calm and happy-sounding. Pet him and praise him some more.

Good luck.

I know this routine oh so well! :) Both of my dogs HATE taking pills, we can't hide them in peanut butter or cheese or anything-they just spit them right out. So I just have to hold their mouths open & sit the pill on the back of their tongue. Its not pleasant for anyone involved but it gets the job done.

As for cleaning the ears, I know how rough this can be too. My boxer mix has had many yeast infections in her ears in the past, so now we clean to be proactive. My boyfriend holds her down & rubs her belly to calm her, while I use a cotton ball (soaked w/ the cleaner) to swab her ear. Then I can use a Q-Tip to reach the places the cotton ball can't. Just remember, your dog will feed off your anxiety or your actions, so just stay calm & it helps them to stay calm too.

Good luck, it never gets any easier it seems! :)

Is there anyway you can hide the meds in his food? Maybe in a nice big chunk of polony.. most dogs will gobble that up too quickly to notice anything in it. With his ears.. Try to get him comfortable with you touching and playing with his ears.. Stroke them and tug on them gently to let him know that it's a good thing. Even if you do that, he'll probably still struggle like hell when it comes to the drops. I suggest getting another person to help you. Get them to kneel or sit behind your dog and have your dog sort of sit in their lap.. they can then get their arms around his torso and you can hold his head and get the drops in and clean out his ears. Reward him a lot once you've done this. If nothing else works, go back to your vet and see if they have any ideas.. Good luck.

Have you tried giving him the pill in a little hunk of hot dog or something similar. That usually works really well with my dog he thinks he is getting a treat. I have a rottweiler and he had some yeast in his ears and my dad had to straddle him to hold him so he could get the medicine in. I remember having to home my moms cat between my legs to get the flea medicine on him so maybe if you held him between your legs that would help.

i have had several dogs. i have two puppies now. put the oral meds in a piece of cheese.

the ear meds just hold the critter down. dont hurt the critter but you must be dominant over it. it is of couse not going to like it, but it for wont like the consequences of not having the meds work

To get your puppy to take the pills it helps if you wrap them in cheese or cover it in peanut butter. That way they think they're just getting food instead of medication.

As for the cleaning of his ears, you'll just have to get someone to help you hold him, there's not much you can do to get him to sit still.

wrap the meds in a piece of tasty meat or cheese. Clean ears gently while he's lying down.
