The purpose is to be a category of questions and answers regarding Religion and Spirituality. Those questions can be of any religious or spiritual nature, so long as they are reasonably polite. Same with the answers.

What role it plays in my life is that it is my home plate. It's where I come by default. That's because questions of this nature have been important to me all my life. I have done a lot of reading and asking questions, took courses in Philosophy of Religion, Psychology of Religion, and Anthropology of Religion when I was in college. I was a philosophy major and specialized in ethics. Even though I've forgotten much of what I learned in college (graduated 1974), I also did a lot of learning on my own, and have something real to contribute to this category.

As to why I stay with Yahoo! Answers more generally, the short answer is I am retired and need something to do. Also, I feel this is a golden communications opportunity, to get to know people all over the world, and what they are thinking and feeling. I don't want to pass it up, and I don't want it to die in troll attacks.

Theoretically, R&S is a place to learn more about other religions and to help people understand your belief system. In actual practice, it's a cross between a brush arbor revival, a demolition derby, and World War III.

I come here to learn about other people's belief systems and to try to clear up some of the misconceptions about Catholicism. I've met some nice people here, and even at its worst, R&S is a fun place. For me, this forum is a blend of education and entertainment.

Some days it seems that the purpose of R&S is for Christians and non-Christians to bash each other.
However, once in a while you will see something here that adds to your store of knowledge of religions other than your own.
That is the role of R&S in my life.
That being the case, I would like to see more Q&A concerning Islam, because that is the one major religion about which I know the least.

In participating here I have been able to sharpen my knowledge of my own faith, and gain some perspective on others.

Nevertheless, the main purpose of R&S (like all Y!A categories) is entertainment as a draw for advertising.

To talk and learn about religion, though that rarely happens. It doesn't play a role in my life other mild amusement when I'm bored during the day at work.

I think the purpose of R&S was to let people express their beliefs no matter how diverse, but it seems like a place where people bash on each other.

I tend to stay away from R&S because it's so controversial.

It's a source of constant amazement at the range of intellects and thoughts that are out there. Sometimes I'm encouraged about humanity, other times I'm so appalled I can hardly believe it.

I have never really looked deep into my beliefs as a Catholic before reading and posting here. I have learned so much about myself, my Catholic religion and my love of God through this. I find it exhilarating to know that others feel so passionately about my religion as I do.
