Sure, the Yaris's are small, so that might be a concern for safety. Hopefully your parents bought you one with the package that includes Option C, that has side air bags (Driver & Front Passenger Front Seat-Mounted Side Airbags & Front & Rear Side Curtain Airbags[1] (GY)). If it has that then it should be a pretty safe car, else just drive carefully lol. Enjoy your car, I've wanted the Sport sedan version of it, they look awesome!
Oh- Since you got a new car, keep everything well-maintained (look in manual for things you need to do) and change oil every 3/months or 3000 miles! Keep the car well-maintained and it will last you forever!

Do you have the sedan or hatchback? I got the hatchback and i love it!! Great on gas and plenty of room with the two door. They are great on reliability and in my mind better then the prius for as parts later down the road. In canada the sell the 4 door hatchback also. But they have no recalls on it and probably never will. The yaris actually came out in late 1999 in japan and europe now as the vitz. And for today they are the #1 selling car in europe because of the fuel economy. So over it has reported no problems and its something new for america but still is known as a great and reliable vehicle overseas. Great car to have and keep for a long time with regular oil changes and fluid changes. I definetly recommend it to anyone. Far as the liftback they made the frame very stable and its rated actually pretty good for a sub compact. Definetly beats any american made car thats a sub compact for safety and reliability.

Prius is twice the cost and hybrid synergy drive. I know you want to be environmentally friendly. But prople do not know Hybrid batterys only last 5 to 10 years and can cost $5,000 to change out plus the dangers of high voltage. I think You should love Yarus they are cute and ugly at the same time. Most Yarus's have up to six air bags so they are a safe ride just drive defensively and stay out of accidents. Be very thankfull you were given over $13,000. After you get a degree and get out on your own you can pay for any new car wou want.

Your parents must done a lot of reading and research when selecting this car for you. It's a great little car that will yield good fuel economy.
I hope you plan to keep it serviced regularly as the manual in the glove compartment suggests.
As you already know structurally all small cars are lightweight and bend easily in accidents. Please drive defensively and don't be distracted talking on the cell phone, eating, or blasting tunes in town. I depend on "hearing" sounds around me when driving in congested areas. You will be accustomed to using your ears as a defensive driving tool.
Good Luck to Ya!

yes it is a pretty good little car, they made good choice as far as cars go,they was thinking of operating cost and insurance cost probably when they bought this for you,but it will last you a long time,if you take care of it,later on when you get a job you can trade it if you like, and it will still be a good car then, since they already bought it id be thankful i had a car, anything beats walking for now though you have a good car, enjoy it,and good luck with it.

RE :Is a Toyota Yaris a good car for a teenager?
I'm 16 (almost 17) and my parents just bought me a toyota yaris without knowing much about it. I've had my license for almost a year so I'm a pretty decent driver.I assume since it's a toyota, it's reliable, and I know it gets good gas mileage, but how safe is it? I don't know much about cars, but so far all I've driven is a toyota prius. Is the yaris a good car for me? (they already bought it... so theres not much I can do about that)

Maybe.
I bought my daughter an '88 Volvo 240 station wagon for $1500.
If you are mostly concerned with safety, there were ways to save some money.
Perhaps they thought you didn't really care about safety but would prefer a stylish, shiny new car.
Parents, you can't live with 'em and you can't live without 'em.
