If the distance is not a problem, the roads will be.
You can take a cross country road, but that is through a lot of smaller towns, with many intersections. Sure to block up at peak times.
And the other main way to travel is first towards London, a big bit of the M 25 and out to the north again. The M 25 is known as the biggest parking lot in England, (or Europe,) so you can not expect the traffic to be anything but blocked before and after work, each day, including some weekend days.
