According to Nascar.com Jimmie Johnson only had 3200 points after 25 races. Then after last nights race he has 5080 or something and moves up 5 spots to take the point lead. Was this last race really worth 1800 points?

Last nights race was the last race before NASCAR resets the points. Each driver in the chase gets 5000 points to start. Then, 10 points are add for each win to determine the points standings for the chase. Jimmie Johnson has won 6 races, therefore he will start the chase with 5060 points. Jeff Gordon is 2nd with 5040, and so one. Since Clint Boyer had no wins, he starts with 5000. Places 13th down keep their respective point totals.

After the 26th race they reset the points, the driver with the most wins (Johnson of course) gets the first place in points, for 10 points per win, with 6 races it gives him 60 points.
No it may not seem fair but all the other driver will get a chance to race for the chase again next year. Nascar is just trying to build Nascars reputation with drama, but it does not build drama it just takes away points from those who have worked really hard to get to where they were before the Chase. The fact of the matter is it does not make sense why they do it the way they do it unless, NASCAR believes that they are giving the more winning racers a chance to grasp the championship over those who have won just recently, but who knows.
My husband and I believe that the old Chases rules were more exciting, no we do not agree just because some one has won more races should be allowed to take the points lead away from other drivers who have worked just as hard and harder even. It is wrong, but people, we are not NASCAR
officials. Hopefully one day they will listen to the fan base until then we deal with it because we love our sport.

The end of the chase was last night right, and this year Nascar is trying something different for the chase format, they reset the drivers points to 5,000, and they order the drivers 1 through 12 based on wins, ( Iknow its confusing) and the reson why Jimmie Johnson has the points lead is because he has 6 wins, and Jeff Gordon has 4

Man things are mesed up but here is the reason from an article on Nascar.

With six wins this season, Johnson will have 60 bonus points heading to the 10-race playoff battle making him the top seed, the same position Johnson was in last season before he won the 2006 Nextel Cup Championship.

It's unfair.

NASCAR resets the top 12 drivers all to 5000 points, then gives each of those drivers a 10-point bonus for each win this season. Johnson has the most wins (6), so he now has 5060 points. Gordon has 4, so, 5040. Bowyer has none, 5000.

Previously, they reset the top-10 to 5000, and for every spot above 10th a driver was, (in actual points) he got 10 bonus points. So, the 1st place driver still had his lead cut to 100 points.

I'm all for rewarding wins with bonus points, but do it all through the season, & don't lump them up to seed drivers for the Chase.

Like 180 points for first, 5 for leading. 5 more for leading the most laps, THEN 10 more for the win. All season. Go back to seeding the drivers the way it was.
Or better yet, just go back to actual points for the entire season. Of course, this year, that would mean J.Gordon just showing up & running mid-pack for the rest of the year...Kinda tough for a driver of his caliber to screw up a 300+ point lead with only 10 to go...

this weekend's race was the last race before the chase officially began, once 26 races are completed the top 10 drivers points are automatically reset to predetermined amounts, these point numbers are so high that it is mathematically impossible for the other drivers to win the championship, so jimmie johnson probably took the lead in the nextel cup this weekend and since he was in first place, his points were reset to 5000

Yes he does. Based on wins . This "chase" deal is stupid. I wouldn't blame the other 31 to 35 teams from not running the last ten races. It's a joke. Now, no one from the other teams better even breath with bad breath on the twelve cars going for the championship.

Jimmie Johnson has the lead because he won more races and I think it sink the leader should be the one that was more consistence I don't like the word seed.

He has the most wins. It's kinda stupid (and I am a Jimmie fan) but that's how the point system works now. It goes by most wins and for every win they get 10 points above the person below them.
