Unfortunately, if you feed the birds, you feed them all. You can however limit some of them by feeding for specific birds. Some birds like thistle seed (finches, chickadees, etc.), some only like fruits (chopped on a platform feeder), and some just like it all. I feed mostly sunflower seeds and thistle seeds. It seems to bring the birds I want most. You will almost always have sparrows and grackles. I have found that the seasons changing changes the number of the annoying birds. I think they just stop as they pass by. You can reduce the number of those birds with specific feeding, but you can't eliminate them. Learn about those birds and you might find they are interesting in their own right and will enjoy them as well.

That depends on the kind of birds you wish to attract. Some birds like finches prefer niger seed, while cardinals like sunflower seeds. Morning doves and most sparrows prefer to eat on the ground. Different types of seed should be put in different feeders so the birds aren't fighting over perch space. Put bafflers or cones over the feeders to discourage squirrels from getting into them, or you can get special feeders with holes that will close if anything heavier than a bird sits on it.

Don't buy mixed seed. Black Oil sunflower and othe rspecialty feeds will keep unwanted birds away. Buy thistle/niger seed and use an upside down feeder. They make them with the holes just UNDER the perch instead of above. Sparrows can not hang upside down to eat like gold finches and chickadee's can.

Have a heart, sparrows are birds, too. How would you feel if you were the "annoying" sparrow, discarded and discriminated by all just because they are plentiful and not unique and beautiful to watch.
