Hi honey. PLEASE do not give up on your puppy.
Let me see if I can help.
I have 4 Sheltie pups and 4 cats and have owned many pets over the past 40 years....I'm pretty good at potty training. LOL

1. Every book will tell you/us that it is never the pups fault but it's owner. I personally believe this correct. PUPS want to please us. They DO NOT WANT TO BE BAD. They just need to be "read right" and that's where we come in.

2. Take your pup out every hour for about 4 days. Every 2 hours at the very least. Remember he is still so young at 6 months.

3. We call going to the bathroom a "Hurry Up." Something about the word "Hurry Up" and "Let's go outside" they just love. So when you start to take her out say:
"Let's go outside Roxy" "Let's go do a Hurry-Up Roxy"

4. When she has gone....say What a Good Dog Roxy.
Again the word "What" with "Good Dog" has them jumping for joy. So praise and lavish pets and giggles on her and a tiny treat.
"What a Good Dog Roxy": I'm so proud of you Roxy"
"What a Good Hurry up you did Roxy"

Trust me she will be thrilled with your attention and love and she will quickly put everything together, to get more of the same. :-) :-)

5. You can also place a small bell by your back door/porch area...and teach her to touch her paw to the bell and ring the bell when she want's to go outside. (Just start with the first part and add in the bell.) Our pups love the bell so much, it has to be put up sometimes....or they ring it for attention and anytime they want to run outside. LOL LOL

Hope this has helped. Please don't give rid of your puppy honey....it's just time and patience and tons of love.
Many blessings, Patti

Why can you only take her out at night?? That seems really stupid. I don't know where you are but I know in Ontario, Canada even though we sign no pet leases for our flats, we can have pets as the government said it's discrimination for us not to be able to.
At 6 months of age, your puppy should now be able to hold her bladder for close to 8 hours. (2 hrs & 1 hr for every month old). I've always had my dogs trained by 9 weeks, even in a flat.
There are puppy pads you can buy - much like the pads used on hospital beds to collect urine or blood seepage. Plastic on the back and white front. The puppy pads have a special scent to attract your dog to it rather than another space in the house. Once you have the dog trained to go on the puppy pad, start to move it ever so slightly toward the door more and more.
Have you tried crating Roxy? There is nothing mean about it providing you get a large enough crate that she can easily move about. I always got the extra large one and covered it with a blanket so the dog had it's own "den" and "safe place" and when going to work, took the dog out after feeding it to make sure she did her business. Then leave blankets piled in the back for a comfy bed and toys to play with and put a puppy pad in the front at first with a dish with a reasonable amount of water in it (not enough to overflow her bladder). Dogs don't want to mess their home so she'll soon get the idea not to go in her crate. You can get metal crates with dishes that clip on the side, up off the floor. Do not leave food - just asking for trouble. Maybe leave one biscuit before leaving to praise her and if the pad is dry when you get home, praise her and give her a favourite treat of hers. Take her out immediately - don't wait till night.
If you can't take the dog out till night, I don't know why you would get a dog and then move to such a place. That's not a responsible thing to do. If for some reason, the rule about "nights only" doesn't or can't be changed, you should move or start looking for a new home for Roxy. Make sure she gets a good home - someone who will love her - even if you take a monetary loss - Roxy is more important than money.
Good Luck

What do you mean "will only allow you to take her out at night?" How would you like it if someone told you that you couldn't take a piss until "night time?" You'd be pissing all over the place too! Like kids, puppies need to be potty trained. NEVER scold the puppy...she would never do anything to displease you intentionally! She just needs to be taught and that takes a little time and a lot of patients. You can't leave the puppy in a room all day...frankly, that's kind of mean. You should regularly take her outside and encourage her to go "potty." Try saying the same thing every time. When she does go, have treats in had (Iams small dog biscuits are the BEST) and give her one with lots of praise and pats...tell her what a good girl she is. If you ever catch her in the act while in the apartment, just shout "NO!" and gently bring her outside to let her finish. Consistency and POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT are key! Don't get rid of the puppy, get rid of the girl! Good luck!

You need to treat the inside of your home in order to get rid of these pesky little guys otherwise they will just re-infest your dogs, you need to find a "Flea Fogger" which you can typically find at your local hardware store(Lowes,or Home Depot),make sure the label says it kills both adult fleas and flea eggs, the only way to stop the fleas completely is to treat the pets with a good quality product and treat your home also. Fleas also carry worms and parasites so you'll need to have all of your pets checked for that too,put all of your pets on a good quality flea/tick preventative such as Comfortis or Advantix Plus,I do not recommendd you use Frontline as they've been having some issues with there product not working. Fleas are serious and this issue should not be taken lightly. And just remember it only takes one flea to start a huge infestation of your house, pets and even yourself.

You said that you can only take your dog out at night? Is it because you are not supposed to have pets there? If so find a good home for your dog as this is very confining.
If this is done for other reasons for the time being, purchase "puppy training pads" and train her to those on the linoleum floor. After she goes, pick up the pad and replace it with a fresh one. To train her to the puppy pads, you must be consistent. Every time you see her getting ready, take her to the pad. After she goes praise her. Also take her a few minutes after she eats or drinks and every time she wakes up.
Good luck.

MOVE into a better place...
dogs need to go out twice in the morning (once before eating to pee - once after eating to run and poop) - and again 2-3 times durring day and into evening to pee.. (they poop only 1 time if on good food, 2-3 times if eating cheap junk)

or yes, get rid of the dog this is entirely an unfair arrangement for it.. a younger pup will have a much easier time of finding a new home - I STRONGLY Suggest taking it to the SPCA or simlilar shelter and let them rehome her - especially if she is a small or medium dog, and especially if she is not spayed..
all too often the "Free to good home" dogs in the newspapers DO NOT get good homes - many are picked up by really nice looking families then sold for research, used to train illegal fighting dogs to kill - or many small ones are put in tiny cages and forced to have litter after litter after litter so their owners can profit by selling to pet stores... OR are taken by serial killers - did you know that most serial killers admitted to starting out by taking "FREE TO GOOD HOME" pets and "experimenting" on them?

YOu cannot do proper background or home checks - the SPCA has a much better ability to do this - most people want young dogs so you dont need to worry as much that she would be put down (although if agressive that is always a risk)...

for potty training - the BEST way is CRATE TRAINING - however in your situation it doesnt sound possible.. seriously if you LOVE your dog - give her up so she can have a better home.. yours is not it...save your money so you can buy your own house....

In order to potty-train a puppy, you have to take her outside at frequent, regular intervals throughout the day. When she does go outside, praise, praise, praise! Don't punish her for going inside - it will just make things worse. Dogs also need daily exercise, both physical and mental. Is she getting walked and played with every day? Are you working on basic obedience with her?

If your situation just won't permit you to properly care for her, your dog will be better off in another home, and it would be easiest for her while she is still young. It's just not fair to keep her inside all day and expect her not to have accidents.

Contact the SPCA or a local rescue organization.

Try newspaper training her, that way she can go potty in the meantime before you take her out at night. When you take her to go potty in the laundry room, clean up the mess with newspaper, and put it in the middle of a pile of other newspapers. Roxy will smell that she's gone there and urinate there. Just keep a sheet in it when you change the newspapers, and she may learn she's allowed to go in it whenever she needs.

I have several hard headed dogs just like Roxy, you got to keep working with them without spanking or negative actions. You have to set up a morning ,noon and night ritual and reward her for good behavior , even if she poop on the rug and only went pee outside. this place you live is not a healthy place for your dog. You can't expect a dog to understand that it's okay to poop on the floor in the morning and not at night. Owning a pet is like having a child, you just got to make it right. Any red blooded redneck wouldn't think twice about taking care of a dog the right way.

Go to www.petfinder.com and contact a rescue in your area that can help you find a place for your dog. I know it is hard- but if you really want to keep her- you need to find a different place to live that will let you take her out when ever she needs to go. If she is a small breed- you can try and train her to go in a litter box- I know that people do that with smaller dogs that live in apartment situations and such- Good luck either way!
