The purpose of life is to develop a better understanding of the principles of happiness.
Our Heavenly Father wants each of His children to grow and develop to our full potential. He created this earth with the conditions it has (e.g., competing ideas of truth, people making both good and bad decisions) so we could gain some insight into right and wrong that goes beyond simple facts.
To illustrate, I tell my children not to lie and why honesty is important. I hope they will understand, but they will probably gain additional insight as they experience what happens when a relationship is damaged through dishonesty.
Earth life encourages us to develop a true understanding of right and wrong that goes beyond some powerful being telling us all the answers.
There are some short videos at the following web site that describe the purpose of life in more detail.

I believe it is to come down to this earth, leaving our pre-mortal existence before God. While on this earth a primary consideration or purpose is to gain a mortal body of flesh and bone and to live by and acquire the experiences we have here. Experience is the best teacher and we learn by living, growing, and through the challenges we face here. Furthermore, I believe that a part of life here is to "prove" our willingness to follow God and live his commandments. As we do so, we live by faith, learn to be obedient and humble, and to rely on Him. After our earth life here, we return home to the God who gave us life in the beginning....

the question is not, what is our purpose, but do we have a purpose? do we need to have a purpose, or are you just looking for one?

CCC - 1 : God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the Church. To accomplish this, when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son as Redeemer and Savior. In his Son and through him, he invites men to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life.
