I am confused as to where the aerial cable should go, from the wall to receiver then output to my tv via component cables (my receiver doesnt support HDMI cabling) or straight to my TV as it has the digital tuner built in and so might yield a better picture? I would then output my TV to my receiver for distributing sound etc. Someone help because I am totally lost!

You are correct.

Aerial cable from wall to TV.
s/pdif cable (coax or optical) from TV to receiver.
Analog out audio from TV to receiver (you may not need this, so read the TV manual)

In your TV setup, specify you want audio output in Dolby Digital.
