Two men lived their lives. Each of them believed in the truth of the same set of commandments, and each of them followed these commandments for their whole lives. Both of them had the same set of beliefs and convictions. But when they died, one went to heaven and the other went to hell. How can you explain this?

One followed out of a sense of love, the other out of a sense of avoiding the punishment for transgressing.

One fulfilled the commands; the other complied by merely keeping them.

It's what is in the heart that matters.

But then, you are giving a very narrow view here, with very little detail.

The divine isn't as insane as old belief systems make it out to be. Everyone goes to the same place upon leaving physical form. Your memories are what determine how you feel at the time, not false gods.

The one who went to heaven went there because he knew he was bad but God was greater and forgave him.
The one who went to hell thought he could pay for his own sins by working them off. He underestimated both the severity of his sins and the mercy of God.

Both of the people you mention called themselves Christian: On their death God said to one -
Matthew 7:22-24 (King James Version)

22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

and to the other He said:
Matthew 25:20-22 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV)

20And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.

21His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

How is it possible? Because God reads the heart and sees through the gloss and the lies from a man's lips and we are all judged accordingly.

Presbyterians would explain this with election ... God's mercy to those He will have mercy on.
