Pugs are expensive because of the numerous health issues with the breed. Breathing problems, skin problems, knee and joint issues... and the list goes on.
Responsible breeders will only breed those dogs who are healthy and have had proper health checks. Responsible breeders will only breed those with sound temperments, proper body shape and soundness and will only breed one or two litters a year.
Because Pugs have such large heads they are often born through cesarian section. Which is very difficult on the mother.
All of these things drive up the price of a responsibly bred pug. The price of puppy mill pugs is lower but you'll end up paying more in long run on vet bills.
Check your local shelter or pug rescue.

Petfinder is awesome, and you'd be helping out a pup who needs a home. I have 3 pugs and they totally rock! If you contact your local pug rescue organization, they may have puppies, but usually not. Breeders charge between $500-$1000, and pet stores (please don't buy from a pet store!!!!) are $1000

I agree with lilbrownx17...
Your local animal shelter is agreat place to find cats and dogs of all ages. They are usually as sweet as can be and just need homes. I would definately check there first!
