I would guess that TV has a sedating effect on prisoners as it does on the rest of the population.
Take away TV and you have to add more guards. TV is cheaper.

Jails, county or city, operate on a limited budget. They have to feed and clothe the inmates in their charge, as well as providing for basic medical care.
While I wouldn't oppose people in jail being allowed to watch TV, I would oppose making it a right. Jails are usually divided into different cell blocks. To purchase television sets for each would be prohibitively expensive for many jurisdictions, not to mention the cost of purchasing cable.
I say, let them read, or learn how to do so.

Prisoners should be encouraged to be as productive as possible doing things such as:
- earning a living
- paying reparations
- learning a skill
However, TV in limited amounts and for limited shows seems like a reasonable break time activity for those exhibiting good behavior. In other words, people should be productive most of the time with periodic break times for rest and relaxation.
I feel the same way about my children. :-)

i think they should be allowed to watch TV but it should
depend on how long their staying in jail. there should be a
different time for watching TV like theres time to eat food or
work out or play sport; there should be a time to watch TV but
the people who stay in jail the longest, should watch TV the most.

Yes, if you don't GIVE prisoners something to do they will FIND something to do, more often than not it's violent and illegal by jail standards and involves activities far worse than watching TV.
Besides, have you seen what's on TV??? Most of it IS punishment.
They DEFINITELY should not be allowed to lift weights so that they can become these animals that can snap your neck with two fingers.

My brother is a police officer in miami, my other brother is a correctional officer with TDC. The current prison system is designed to rehabilatate prisoners so that they can return to society as a functioning and contributing citizen. In my opinion It angers me that I pay for them to have access to cable when we have none, but without tv there is no contact with the outside. If we intend to return these people to our society after years of confinement, It makes it easier if they understand how the world they ar being sent too has changed. Our prisons are overcrowded as it is. We really need to do what we can to make sure these people learn from their mistakes so we dont have to keep paying for their incarceration because they go back. If we really intend our system to be one of rehabilitation instead of one of punishment then tv is a necessity. A lot can change in 5, 10, 20 years.

I think watching TV should be allowed but only to prisoners who have a good record of cooperation, and access to the TV should be used as a reward for good behavior. I don't think TV should be a "right".

To answer for those who work in the corrections field.
We use TV as an activity and a privilege. It prevents more incidents in corrections than any weapon or threat the staff has.
To those who believe that everything should be taken away from inmates, we would be turning out a much more violent population if all they did was sit or lay in their beds and think.

Yes but i think they should give everyone a turn 'cause its always on BET. Why shouldnt they be allowed? Half those people are harmless pot smokers. And even if they killed people theyre at least citizens so they have some rights still. If theircrime was really bad they get sent to PC anyway, no TV there . . . .

I think TV should be used as a reward for good behavior or whatever. It should be restricted to certain channels though. Plus you did say jail, not prison, so they are not going to be there forever.

This was on The Power of 10 like 2 weeks ago. I think they should only get 1 channel which would either be current events or the weather. They shouldn't be able to watch whatever they would like because the whole point of being in jail is for punishment and to NOT have all the comforts of home. There is a good reason that the majority of people are sitting in the slammer and I don't think they should be enjoying themselves, at all.
