"Religion is based . . . mainly on fear . . . fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand. . . . My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race."

The "fear" spoken of in most religions is one of reverrence and love. Not an actual fear, like one might maintain as a child of the "boogieman".

Yes, there can be a "fear of death" for those unprepared for it (spiritually). The "fear of death" can be good if you listen to, accept it as a request to prepare for the life to come, eternal life in Jesus Christ. There is Power in Prayer, attending Church, learning more about the Scriptures, and fellowship with those favoring the same religion as yourself.

May God Bless

Henry Louis "H.L." Mencken, American editor and critic (1880-1956).

Here's a couple more for ya:
Steven Weinberg, Theoretical Physicist.
"Religion is an insult to human dignity. Without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

Society without organized religion is like a crazed psychopath without
a loaded .45.
