ok as an altima owner myself i understand what you mean cuz i felt the same way especialy when gas was through the roof so what i did was a complete tune up with the best things that they had spark plugs new coils (cuz they dont have wires) and whent from regular oil to synthetic got new tires, i had a k&n air filter but decided to go with a cold air intake and cleaned out my trunk also i drived normal i think it was worth it cuz a full tank of gas lasted me a week and a half but then again i do drive a lot

Not knowing the history of the car I'll start from the ground up with the simple stuff...it's usually not one big thing with mileage, just adding up the little things. 1) Make sure the tire pressure is at least what Nissan recommends, or a bit more. 2) Check and clean or replace the air cleaner element. 3) Replace the plugs (I've had great success with Bosch Platinum plugs). 4) Replace the plug wires (with the best you can afford). 5) Then, and this is the part most people overlook, replace the engine oil and transmission fluid with synthetic fluids. I recommend Amsoil if you can find it (Google it) but any good synthetic lubricant will far exceed petroleum based lubes. With the above work I've taken a '93 Suzuki Sidekick (165,000 miles) from an average of 27 mpg to 33.1 mpg....and I get 25+ mpg from a '97 Mustang Cobra (135,000 miles) that I bought new.

17 to 21 in town and up to 29 highway What is wrong with that. Manual or automatic? standard size tires? I have Lot's of customers complain fuel economy and it's how they drive. MY 400 hp Pontiac gets 13.6 in town but at 70 miles an hour freeway speed control set 25 miles a gallon. Place a clean air filter in it and do a 30 mile freeway trip fill up at a gas station on the on ramp just until the nozzle clicks off pull out to the freeway like grand dad does accelerate slowly to speed turn around at 15 miles go back to the same gas station same pump same nozzle clicks off do the math! miles divided by gallons. AUto trans use over drive manual shift up gears at no more than 3,000 rpms get into high gear quickly. set the speed control.

invest into a NISMO Cold air Intake System.
look into an aftermarket Exhaust muffler. It doesn't have to be a loud one. Starting here will increase the fuel economy.
second investment should be made by going to get a basic tune up by a reputable Japanese shop. try looking into some of these import race shops. They can tune up your car almost as well as going to the dealer and these guys are always working on imports looking for better performance without sacrificing fuel economy .
