The treadmill is an awesome way to tone, burn calories and stay fit. I should know. I walk/run a minimum of 3 miles, 5-6 times a week. I live in a climate that doesn't afford me the ability to walk outside year round. That's why I invested in a treadmill. I don't know who "they" are, but if you read fitness magazines or websites, most fitness experts agree that a treadmill is an effective way to stay fit or lose weight.

The treadmill is a good form of exercise, it can be slightly less effective that walking or running if you hang on to the hand grips, but if you don't it has the same effectivness as walking/running.

The tredmill is excellent exercise, if you follow a good routine on it. Interval training and incline running will both burn off more calories than running on flat ground.
