Depends on how old is your child. If it a child within a year please do not bother, it is a growing phase, a child will come over it. The more you till the child to stop the more it will do. SO when ever he tries to suck, you could divert his attention towards his new toys and books which he could be interested. Please do not force on him. It will make things worse and you will be more disturbed.

Probably not, my sister sucked her thumb 'til she was 10ish, my sister in law was 12 and my niece is still doing it behind closed doors at 9. All of them had stuff painted on their nails, it is a bitter paint to stop people biting their nails.

You could try a rewards chart if they are old enough to understand, but it will probably be a habit they have to grow out of.
Sorry I had to bring bad news, lol

Try painting her nails with a foul tasting polish called 'bitter aloes' . When she puts her thumb in her mouth she will taste it and immediately pull it out. Paint it on both thumbs so she can't just alternate.
It might sound cruel but its better than thousands of dollars in dentist/orthodontist bills later on.

best of luck, oh and remember to reward her for not sucking her thumb too!
