I can help with that problem, just add one cup of White Vinegar to the hottest water the duvet can handle or you can use warm water if you like, allow to soak for two hours then wash in full cycle without any detergent or fabric softners, no softners are needed as vinegar softens and deodorizes and removes stains, when cycle is done just place in the dryer without a dryer sheet on warm to delicate temperature on your dryer do not over dry as this will make it rough again if line dried hang out of direct sunlight as vinegar whitens if left in the sun, if the softness is not to your liking rewash again in one cup vinegar or just plain water then add a wash cloth that has been treated with a dollop of hair conditioner rubbed into the cloth and folded over then tossed in the dryer with the duvet this will soften your duvet but won't make it stiff or build up on your duvet, this idea is fabulous for softening clothes too and is much cheaper as you only need a small dollop of the conditioner on the washcloth, warning do not get this conditioner on your clothes when placing it in the dryer as it could leave a stain if you do but if you place it quickly and start the dryer without any delay it works perfectly and your things will come out smelling wonderful and very soft. Good Luck !

Wash your duvet set on a low temp even 30ºc and add fabric softener. If you can hang your set outside in the fresh air , you will be left with a nice fresh smell and when you iron it it will remain soft

It takes several washings to remove the sizing from the fabric. The higher the thread count, the softer the sheets. I prefer 400 or better thread count. Love my 660 Egyptian cotton, overstock.com, queen size $60.
