You can be dilated for weeks without labour starting, however 3cm means only 7 to go and thats a great start when labour does happen!!
being 36 wks along I would be inclined to think it will happen in the next 2weeks or so, so take it easy, go for gently walks and pack your bags. do any last minute baby things you may have left to do and other than that, enjoy your last minutes of pregnancy.

Best of luck

It's sorta hard to know since every woman's body is different. My friend was dilated to a 3 for the last month and a half of her pregnancy! I am 38+1 and I am a 3, 90% effaced, and baby is head down at -2 station. But I have been that way for a week now... and before that at my 36 1/2 week appt I was 1 1/2 dilated and 80% effaced. So I've progressed some and my doctor said it could be anytime, but it's different for everyone! Good luck!

I was check on the 29th of Aug... and was at 3 cm. So... I'm assuming you can stay like this for some time. I'm coming up on two weeks and so far nothing. I feel like she's never going to come.

I've come to the conclusion that dilation and effacement will not tell you how close you are to labor. And I'm resorting to patience and the possibility that she may not come for another 3 weeks.
