zalem and to others. they are not to make us superior it is sign of respect.

while on the phone and they are explaining something or whatever, you acknowlegde wiht a simple "yes, ma'am" or all of my friend's children speak to me with the yes ma'am and ms Val. it is a courtesy. manners. respecting the elders. especially, to the the grandparents and that era.

hard to find children now a days that do that. some are offended when you dont use those terms. it is not meant for more of your circle of friends, but to strangers.

I believe it is a wrong way to use these terms. You can say Mr. or Mrs. or Miss. Sir and Maam signify a higher social status. when you say Sir, you already admit that the man infront of you is a superior human to you and more important than you, and he is your master or something.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I hate these words.

I never say ma'am or sir. Those are respectful??? Women are the biggest haters when it comes to the Ma'am term!!! I'm an older "girl"! I myself really don't care, but I've seen a lot of stupid woman pretend to be offended!!! GOOD QUESTION!!! As far as the SIR term goes, men are more simple and not as bitchy. So in a nut shell, Sir is all good but Ma'am, You need to be careful!!! DO NOT use Ma'am EVER!!! If it slips out, say and pretend that it wasn't you!!!

we use those terms in different ways

like an assistant in a posh store might call a customer 'sir' but you would never say 'yes sir' to a person you know, whatever their social status. Same with madam (and never say mam people will look at you like a weirdo who learns his etiquette from American films)

Yes I do. I was raised that way, plus I went into the military at the age of 17 and it became a way of life.

When I'm not in a formal situation I don't say Ma'am and Sir, I use first name. If I don't know someone's name I say it sometimes though...

I'm not from the south but I do use those terms... I've found that they can actually offend people that aren't used to hearing that.

Never have because I was raised in the mid-west and pacific northwest. I think it is a custom that should be encouraged.

If it's traditional I would, but we Australians don't use those terms.

Good to see old fashioned values still around.
