Last night Israel played a football match against England as a qualifier for the European Cup in 2008. How can Israel play in a european match, it is not in Europe. Since when has Europe been in the Middle East?
Also how can Israel take part in the European Song Contest?
I am confused. Has the map of the world changed recently when i was asleep and someone has now said that Israel is part of Europe?
Can anyone explain this to me please.

"English Rose" you have asked a question which no one in the know wants to answer. Here is my answer to a similar question elsewhere in Yahoo Answers :

"That is an interesting question which a lot of people ask but get Ziltch as an answer.
Israel takes part in everything European when they are NOT an European state.
Israel takes part in the Miss EUROPE contest.
Israel takes part in the Europe Song Contest (Eurovision)
Israel takes part in the European football championships
Israel takes part in the World Cup football championship as one of the European countries.
Worst of all, Israel has applied to become a member of the European Union which is something reserved for European countries only. It is like Ghana or Algeria becoming E.U. members.
Anyone has an answer to this then ?! I am perplexed.
Reasons why they participate in European football as an European country that they are NOT have been given but how can it be explained Isreal participating in Miss EUROPE contest AND in the Europe Song Contest (Eurovision) AND have applied to be a European Union member ?? How can those be explained away like football ?! Anyone can answer that ???"
"Dr Flowers" - if that is the case then remove the word "EUROPE" from those competitions. Call it Vision Song Contest... '2008' instead of EURO-2008... Miss XXX instead of Miss Europe Contest. Get it ?!
"bigseagull" - but do Kazakhstan take part in Miss Europe, Eurovision Song Contest, in the European Group of the World Cup ? Noooo !

Australia is not in Asia, but they quit OFC and joined AFC. It's the same with Israel, Kazakhstan and Turkey. They used to be in AFC, but transferred to UEFA some time back.

In Israel's case, they used to be in AFC, but Muslim and Arab states refused to play them. For 20 years Israel was not affiliated to any confederation and played in OFC and UEFA, until they were permanently accepted in UEFA in 1991. Since then, Israeli clubs have been joining UEFA competitions and the national team now play qualify for the European championships and FIFA World Cup as part of Europe.

Because of isolation by many of its Middle Eastern neighbors, the Israel Football Association was not affiliated with any confederation between 1974 and 1994. Since 1991 Israeli clubs have been participating in European competitions and they received full UEFA membership in 1994. They were invited.

Before 1974 they did play in Asia. In 1964 they hosted and won the Asain Cup. Finished 2nd in 1956 and 1960.

Security risks is not the problem, the problem is that a number of countries in Asia ( Iran , Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iraq, Syria ) REFUSE to participate in any head to head play against Israel and have forfeited matches in the Olympics for example rather than play the hated Israelis.

If Israelis go to any Islamic country they will be dead before they even arrive And Turkey has 2 parts. Europe and Asia. Istanbul has Asia and Europe side.

Israel play in Europe due to the political situation in the Middle East - there would be too much trouble if they played the Arab nations. Some countries would probably even refuse to play them. Imagine them being drawn against Iran, whose leader has said that they should be wiped off the face of the earth.
So the map of the world hasn't changed, but perhaps you need to wake up to the world around you.

i can not provide statistical assessment (tambovi already did an excellent activity on it). i will inform you although that travelers in Israel are very secure. you will no longer see any indicators of conflict in any respect. So tell your mom to seek for coverage employer that may not discriminate her in keeping along with her shuttle plans. vacationing Israel for travelers oftentimes is somewhat pleasent and fairly very very secure

I was astonished when I knew Kazakhstan was in the competition to qualify for Euro 2008 in the same group as Belgium and Portugal.

And I don't understand why Australia was entitled to play in the asian zone.

Political reasons....Its because several Arab nations in the Asian confederation of FIFA now refuse to play Israel, so FIFA allocated them to the European Confederation.

As for the eurovision song contest...who cares, its a pile of camp shite anyway!
