~The same reasons as for US expansion in the 18th and 19th centuries and for European expansion in the centuries before that. Look at some census figures of the times. Look at a map. Look at arable land on Honshu. Look at the geology and natural resources of Japan. Consider silly things like food, steel and petroleum products. Use some simple common sense. Add two plus two. Add in British and US policies regarding Japan in the '20s and '30s. (With that variable thrown in, 2+2= Pearl Harbor.)

Securing resources to make Japan self sufficient was the biggest reason. But if you add some good old fashioned lust for conquest you'll get the idea. They were out to increase the power of Japan. To do that they needed more resources so they were not dependent on other nations for trade. They also needed to project power and influence. In those days that still meant gaining new territories. So they set out to conquer a large area. This would serve two purposes, to gain those resources they badly needed, and to provide a geographical buffer zone around Japan itself.

It might even have worked, but that kind of thing tends to make a lot of enemies.

In order to compete with European powers Japan needed to acquire colonies with raw material resources. Japan herself did not have sources of oil, gas, iron, or coal. Follow the money to find the ultimate reasons for war.

Because expansion is awesome. You end up with way more stuff than you started with, and if you time it right, the rest of the world is too busy flinging poo at each other to do anything about it until its too late.
