The pap test called a pap smear is a test that is done on women every 1-3 years starting at around age 18-21 to screen for cervical cancer.
It is done by using a special brush to take cells from the cervix and put on a slide that is then sent to the lab for analysis. They check to make sure that there is nothing out of the ordinary with the cells.
The results come back in about 1-2 weeks.

If the doctors suspect cervical cancer they request the patient to undertake "pap test". If the smear of cells they collect shows abnormality it is diagonised as cancer and if the smear test is negative one does not suffer from cancer. Treatment / Medicines too are prescribed based on the tests. The earlier the diagnosis better the chances of curing any ailment.
