Your PC consumes 100 to 200 watts. A big part of that turns to heat inside the PC. The fans usually blow air in up front and exhaust hot air at the back. So do not place you PC where there will be inadequate ventilation

The Processor generates a lot of Heat. That is why it has a heat sink and fan. The processor on your graphics card will also produce quite a bit of heat and some have fans.

The power supply is another source as well has the hard drives.

It is good idea to have good ventilation and keep the insides clean.

On a modern computer (built within the last 2-3 yrs) I would have at least 3 fans. 2 for the case and one for the CPU. If the video card is plugged in and not mounted on the motherboard I would mount a fan on it also.
Heat Kills Electronics.
You should also unplug and vaccum out your computer's case once every 6 month.
