If the car doesn't run and you can't get it up and running, then you're out $350. If your dad can fix it, great. However, it sounds to me like the car has not been taken very good care of by its previous owner. Keep in mind that when buying a car from an individual, you have no warranty or recourse if the car does not perform as promised. I would be leary that I'd be putting more and more money into the car as time goes on. It might need a whole new battery in which case you will need to figure in an additional $50 at least. You are now at $600 minimum, plus insurance, tags and taxes. You need to decide how much you are willing to invest in a car and how much operating expense (gas, oil changes, repairs, insurance, tags and taxes) you can afford before purchasing any car. Don't make an impulsive decision on this. Good luck!

A "sort of" mechanic isn't likely going to be able to install a transmission. You should expect to dump a bunch of money into this car. Regularly. And if your Dad is "sort of" a mechanic, he ought to know whether or not this is a good deal. Realistically, a transmission job will cost you several hundred dollars. And no telling what additional problems arise after you get the car actually running. Good luck.

I wouldn't do it, you don't need that for a first car, the transmission is broken so you can't drive it to find out any other problems, the brakes could be shot, the steering and/or alignment might be bad, their could be engine problems, after all the car is 11 years old and is not some type of classic you wouldn't mind pouring a little money into. Find something you can drive around town an down the freeway so you can find all the problems out.

battery uncharged might mean it needs an alternator; transmission replacement is a long job but you don't have to pay your dad hourly so that's ok; as long as these are the only problems then it's a decent deal. if there are numerous other small or large issues then no, go find another car that runs and drives coz it's still an 11 year old car and there's other old ones that don't need these things.

transmission being replaced is a pretty big job, but if your dad can pull it off for less than 200, it sounds ok.
Your dad is the mechanic, ask him to look it over for you.
Good luck.

Since your dad is a mechanic, why don't you get his opinion.
If this is such a good deal, needless for you to say, you dad will strongly encourage you to get it, else he will get it for himself.
If you relatively well-off and do not need a junk like this, then I suggest that you get a brand new car.
