I agree, it is not really necessary to use a shock collar for a dog who wishes to bark. I do not have anything against the principle of using a mild shock to control aggressive and out of control dogs in training, however once this has been achieved their is no need to keep using it. And anyway why not let a dog bark, its what they do, if you don't like then don't own a dog.

Well I used one on our dog before and he did not like it but he still did what he wanted to do. If I had it to over again I would not have used it on my dog. So I would just ask you this, would you use one on your self? I just think that there are other methods that can be used that are still very successful and less painful even if it is just for a moment. i.e... Water gun's are great , find a word that is uncommon to use in your home as a command word for him and he will learn that when you say it that you are giving him a command to stop and obey you also using that word and the water gun together at first for a while will help too. Using a common every day word such as stop or no will just confuse him if your talking to some one else and he hears you so just use you imagination or look up a command word in another language that will be easy for you to remember and use the word wisely and always follow through like you would with a child. Have fun and enjoy your pet and your life. Amma

It is kind of a coin-toss between being cruel and the owner being cruel to the neighbors by allowing it to bark all night. My neighbor had a dog that I swear responded to a special signal from a satellite deep in outer space.
Dogs that bark for "no reason" really do get on my nerves.

I think so. Would you want a mild jolt every time you spoke over a certain level? Dogs don't bark without reason--someone needs to look into what's causing excessive noise and figure out a solution that doesn't involve shocking the dog.
