I haven't read anything by him (yet), but at the moment, Erasmus comes to mind - a book I borrowed from my history teacher talks about him extensively. But though I haven't read him except for some quotes, I've read about him. He sounds like he was ahead of his time, a man of reason and books and learning, not afraid to satirize the sacred if he didn't agree with it.

But other than that, I just have to say Da Vinci, because he's brilliant. He had all the talent of a savant without any noticable mental setbacks. According to those who knew him, he was an overall decent guy. He wasn't afraid to break some established taboos of his day in the name of science (dissecting bodies to sketch and such).

Oh oh, and Giles Corey, one of the victims of the Salem Witch Trials. He refused to make a plea one way or the other when accused, so they pressed him under rocks to try to force him to cooperate. But all he would say was "more weight," until he died, still without saying a plea. He refused to acknowledge and indulge their ridiculous rampage.

I like Martin Luther King, Jr. He changed the US, and made alot of strive in civil rights for people who were put at the back of the line in everything. He put his life on the line so that one day maybe people will get an epiphany and say "hey, you and I are not so different".

I don't have one and I don't admire any of the people you mention; although there are a few people I admire, some of whose actions are meritorious, to me, but to have a role model I would have to make someone up, because my values are not ones often found in real people.

Ulysses S. Grant.

I am being practical, and realistic, and I did not choose him because "he is famous and I studied him my History book." I admire him for putting up with a load of crap from his superior (Henry Halleck), who was jealous of his ability to lead and achieve tactical victories.

I also admire him, because he left us his 'Memoirs' -- which is an indispensable book, and much of it was written while he was battling cancer. If you read Ulysses S. Grant's 'Memoirs' you will know why the North won the American Civil War.

Thanks for the thumbs down.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz. He was a Filipino saint tortured by the Japanese and was tortured even more to deny his faith in God, but he remained faithful and died for what he believed in. This famous saying belonged to him " If I had a thousand lives I would offer them all to God". He is my role model because of that.
