As a surgical tech, I worked as part of the sterile team during surgical procedures. When I first started in this field, I was NOT prepared for some of the sounds and smells that my senses were bombarded with. The worst by far was the smell of burning human flesh, as clouds of thick smoke came wafting into my face, this was because of electro-cautery. I thought NOTHING could smell worse than that...Until the first time I assisted on a tumor removal. The surgeon would cut, and the assistant would cauterize to stop the bleeding. So at that point, burning tumor became far worse than burning human flesh. Now I'm thinking, "I'm SURE that nothing could smell worse...Until the time a patient was brought in for emergency surgery, with Gaseous Gangrene. That was 13 years ago. And to this day, I have not found ANYTHING that even came close to the stench of Gaseous Gangrene.

I'm the equal as you, I work in a mortuary and i've noticeable and smelled the worst of the worst. The grossest one I smelled used to be any person who had been deceased for 7 years and the household wanted to take her physique out of state. So we had to take her out of the old casket and put her within the new one. Not a pretty smell

Ask anybody who has been in the military in combat or a cop and they will agree with me I bet, it is the smell of death. It has a peculiar smell that you instantly recognize.
I can't really describe it, but wow, it will knock your socks off and make you regret your decision to enter that area. I read somewhere that smell is the strongest trigger of memory and I know even when i went to where the evidence was stored to dry from a homicide scene we worked it was like an instant trip back to the crime scene!

I was a hospital chaplain nearly 10 years ago. One of our duties was to release bodies to funeral homes or the county medical examiner out of the hospital morgue. though the bodies were kept in a large walk in refrigerator, many of them reeked badly- and the fluids: blood, piss, diareah. one time a young woman came into the emergency room- her asshole boyfriend shot her in the face (she later died), her bowels had emptied & blood was everywhere. horrible smell & sight.
