i hear people saying "i'm emo" or "i'm goth" or whatever, and they sound pretty proud of it. why do they like to confine themselves to a social group?

to me, it sounds kind of... lame and myspace-y. :/

This, I believe, is a good question. In my opinion, you have this just a little bit wrong, usually it is other people that confine other people to social groups. Sometimes, in which the case you have heard, people have been that way for years, hid it, then started dressing how they feel; usually a social group is defined by how someone acts and dresses. Most people call defining people "labeling". Take emo for instance, if you are emotionally depressed, emotional, dress like an emo, or act like an emo, most people will label you as an emo. One reason people like being defined into social groups is that you get to hang-out with people that share your common intrests and such. Sometimes only one group benifits from this; if preps are hanging out with eachother they don't want a hood, greaser, emo kid, scene kid, goth, etc. haning out with them, if they are like most people who are labeled. I hope this opinion helps you.

People tend to stick with a group that they feel connected to. It may or may not be intentional. Common interest goes beyond superficial exterior looks. Inclusion is an important part of the teenage years. Faults are magnified in your mind and to "fit in" sometimes people adapt their looks and behavior. Your attitude toward their group behavior as lame is quite exclusive, and is fuel for such behavior. Remember, just because they tend to hang around certain people doesn't mean that they are confined to that same group. Why not be the person to knock down the barrier and associate with them?

People feel the need to belong....they say oh yeah im goth or emo but are they really? I'm thrown into the whole goth/emo stereotype but i don't think that i am goth/emo....I'm dark and weird but i'm not in a social group...more of an outcast

Our brains sort information out in catagories; that is the way it goes. [that is psychology stuff...] We all want to fit into 'a' group and then we claim it because we want to feel worthwhile and needed to ourselves and to others. Actually, we do not need to be a 'part' of any one group. We need to find out who we are ourselves without the dumb labeling. Frankly, putting ourselves into a 'group' labels us if you think seriously about that.
Cluster groups are many... think of for example: I am a woman, white, married, a mother, middle-aged, a student, I live in a home, I drive a car...blah-blah. Those are are some of all groups of catagories that fit me in particular. I AM all those things, but above all, I am ME. I chose to be me, not part of anybodies group. I don't like to follow anyone's crowd and never have. Why be a 'carbon copy'?

You are very correct in your asumptions about the social groups. It is only a [phoney] sense of security, but it 'is' a security of a sorts. Every age group has their 'group' that hangs out with the same type of person. It's only natural.
Smart thinking! Good for you!!

Human Beings are Pack-Animals.... They are tribal. There is better chances for finding a mate in groups, there is better hunting in packs, there is safety in numbers, birds of a feather flock together.... and so on.

It is natural to want to belong. It makes us feel important. The chemical processes in the mob-mentality give us anonymity and euphoric feelings... its ALL in the endorphins...

To belong is one of man's basic needs after survival and sex.

However it is more healthy to be a part of several groups and not rely on just one.
That way you are not dependant on just one, and also you help bring society together by moving between groups.

a person always wants to feel important...that is our main goal in everything we do, simply to be noticed...
