Never been a fan of his. Great player on the ice when he wanted to be, but a very selfish person
1) Sent a letter to the Penguins asking them not to draft him
2) Once drafted, refused to put on the sweater
3) Turned down chance to play for Canada at 1987 Worlds
4) Turned down an invitation to play for Team Canada at 1991 citing 'tiredness'
4) Turned down an invitation to play for Team Canada at 1996 World Cup
When you are among your country's best players, I think you should show the commitment when your country calls on you!
Just a man who's antics have turned me off more than once

Yes, I think Mario was one of if not the most naturally talented players to ever put on a pair of skates. He averaged over 2 points per game before his first retirment. I often wonder what his numbers would have been if he played a healthy career that was not mostly part of the hook and hold, clutch and grab, football on ice 90's. There is also the factor for a great part of his career he was playing with AHL level talent around him and still managed to dominate the league. I argue with friends that if Lemieux were able to play in the mid 70s instead of the mid 80s and 90s and had Messier, Kurri, and other NHL LEGENDS around him nearly his entire career and you stick Gretzky on the crap Penguins of the 80s the numbers would more than flip and Lemieux would be regarded as the greatest of all time.

Depends on which Mario you're talking about, the one with the puck or without. Rarely looked like the same guy to me.
Awesome talent, but looked totally disinterested some days, even before he got sick.

While I respected his game, I never really thought that highly of him as a person. While it is not his job or his problem, I always thought he could be more of an ambassador of the game a la Gretzky but he never really wanted any part of selling the game.
Sure he seems more willing to sell the game now, but that is because he has a vested interest. Also, he never seemed as gung ho as some about representing his country and I really thought he was whiney and tempermental.
Bottom line I guess though is he was paid to play hockey and not to sell the game and he was amazing and excelled at the game so kudos for that but I expected more from him.

Yes I do. Esp. with his dedication to the Penguins- though I am not a fan of that team- i think it is to be admired for what he did. He also won a courageous battle with cancer, and how can you argue with that?
