Wow! I have not seen this quote before but it's a good one. To me it means that when we stop worshiping what is not of intrinsic worth ( such as fame, material goods, and money in and of itself) ) we can then discern and honor values which are important to human survival, such as love, loyalty. group effort,and support for those who can't help themselves.

I wish I had the context or the name of the piece... but I'll go it this way: Emerson meant the listener or reader should take "heart--" in knowing that when "half-gods", which I interpret to mean men, "go" or die, "the gods arrive",angels or actual gods from wherever: myths, legend or truth... Anyway a happy thing.
