Yes.
But this is something I don't see happening because America was founded on capitalistic premises. We believe in working hard for your own, not for the benefit of our society. If we call it by what it is, socialistic, American's knee-jerk baulk and run for the hills to gather shotguns.
The sad part is, if just a few people would look into what sort of healthcare system we have and the corporations that run it, as well as the BENEFITS to making sure people are well - it would be an eye opener.
But, as it stands, we buy the doctors, lobby our medical practice, and run it like a business - all on the assumption that "well, if that low-life would get a job, they could afford healthcare," and not understanding that many people who DO work don't get coverage from their employers and can't afford it otherwise. We then stigmatize them for having to get government aid, and depending on where you are, even the corporate-run healthcare system will put them next to last in the list of people to help.
We have a portion of our population that will wait until they are in crisis, and rush to the ER for their healthcare... guess who pays the higher premiums for that? No one bothers to look at the statistics to see that if they were given preventative care, it would actually help everyone.
Nope... we knee-jerk, look the other way, and stand firm with our ideas of progressive America, rather than realizing things need to be fixed, and they won't get fixed by forgetting those that can't afford appropriate care.

Yes! Is it a right? I don't know about that. Does every person on this planet deserve to be healthy? Yes. There's a difference between having a right to something and deserving something. I'm glad you worded it that way.
This is one of my big issues. It's a little personal to me. It really irritates me when people assume that if you can't afford health care you must be lazy and good for nothing and deserve to be sick. Do rich people deserve to be healthier than poor people? That's what it really comes down to and it seems that many people think so.
It will be like the mortgage crisis...ignored until it starts affecting the middle and upper classes. And it will.
What can we do about it? We can elect a presidential candidate that will be in favor of doing something about the health care crisis.

That's the problem with America today. Everyone thinks they deserve something just for being born here.
Once upon a time, you had to work for what you had.
It's called the land of opportunity, not the land of free stuff.
I think it is reasonable to not deny emergency medical care to anyone in need of it, especially children, but it doesn't mean that you should be able to go to the Doctor if you have a cold just because you are a citizen.
Part of being a citizen is being a productive member of society. If that were the case, you could afford health care.

If they work and wanna pay for it sure, it's their dough. If their chronically unemployed they certainly Deserve to do with out it if they can't pay for it out of THEIR pocket. People that are productive always have more amentities. People that "ding" the pooch generally are beggers at best & should be ostracized.

Yes. I plan to be a doctor when I grow up. And I must say that I do not want to practise medicine in the US. There is something very sick about a system where doctors are rewarded for giving less care! I want to be able to treat people when they need it.
