The light on the 940 doesn't flash when the cartridges are empty, it flashes when it detects a problem with one of the cartridges.

Take both cartridges out, and wipe the copper-colored contact strip running up the back gently with a tissue. Put them back in.

If that doesn't work, you may need to replace one or both of the cartridges. Problem is, without spare cartridges, you won't know which of the cartridges is causing the error. If you've got empties hanging around, use them alternately with your error-causing ones, to figure out which one is the culprit.

Rare but possible: There is a slim chance it could be the printer. When you have both cartridges out, look in the printer where the cartridges fit. Make sure that the color side and black side are identical. There should be a silver-colored bar in place by a spring, vertically positioned in both halves of the carriage. I have seen dozens of printers where the black side has lost its silver bar, and the cartridge can't line up properly in the carriage, causing the light to flash. Considering the number of printers I see in a week, I will tell you it is rare for this to happen, but I wanted to let you know to check there before you invest money in new cartridges.

aj, that means it's out of one of the inks. Put in a new black one first, and try printing. If that's not it, put in a new color cartridge. Also, be sure all the cords and cables are not only plugged in, but tight. Finally, check that you have paper in the printer and there isn't a paper jam. When these don't work, call HP. They are very helpful there. I call them when I have a problem.

Have you tried completely removing the whole programme and the printer (uninstalling) Then re-installing them? If the printer prints in colour on some other p.c then the fault must be with yours. It sounds like a programme fault not a mechanical or electrical one.
