When i try to format the hard disk it wont work. When i try to install windows xp it says i need to format it. When i do halfway though the format it says the hard disk may be damaged. Does anyone know what i could possibly do without spending large amounts of money or is the hard disk just stuffed?

Simple answer you cannot. Once the HD has been damaged you are better off exchanging it for a new one. There are some shops who have the device to read the HD data in case recovery is needed but after that using the same HD for more data is asking for trouble.

Well, when a drive is formatted, the most of the drive is moved into an "old windows" folder with the same programs as before. So it could either be that your drive is full halfway into formatting, or your drive is broken.

The only product I have found to help me fix several bad hard drives is HDD Regenerator. There is a trial version you can test linked below. It fixed about 80% of the drives I have been able to use it on. If you can see the drive in the BIOS then you can at least give this a shot. By the info you have given me, I can say you have a very good shot at recovering the drive.

You can get a program that can read the HDD's S.M.A.R.T. Data, this will tell you if it has had any hardware failures recently as well as the likelyhood that it will in the near future.

Otherwise, try downloading and running Darik's Boot and Nuke.
This runs from a floppy drive and "nukes" (formats) the hard drive, after that install windows normally.

You're better off getting rid of this hard drive and starting fresh with a new one. There are many reasons your hd can go bad.

For example, your read/write head came loose and is scratching the platter. Or, your power supply is bad ain is sending spikes of electricity to your computer.

You never know. If you start putting information on that drive, you could just lose it again because the drive will continue to deteriorate. Ugh! I hate it when this stuff happens.

you cannot repair a hard disk as their is no air and oxygen inside a hard disk. once you open, it won run. if your info is really that valuable, then i would suggest taking it to a hard disk recovery centre, but they charge more than an arm and a leg

I would just throw it away. A damaged part is a risk to the entire system, and you are lucky the entire system wasn't fried by the bad PSU

I wouldn't trust my data on a bad drive like this.
