NOTE: I use the word album freely, and it can mean either vinyl or CD. It used to mean vinyl, but now it pretty much means a CD.

1. A single is one or more single tracks off of an album that a record company feels have the most potential to be a hit and generate interest in an album or band. A single is often released in advance for advanced play on radio to generate buzz. In the old days, a single was also a 45 rpm vinyl record, which contained a "hit" song. A vinyl single is smaller than a whole record.

2. A b-side is flip side for a single, meaning a 45. It is a song which is chosen to complement the single, but not considered to have as large a chance of being a big hit. Often, they are chosen by the band or artist, because they don't always get to pick their singles. Sometimes the b-side ends up being the hit. Now that there are CDs, b-sides often only get released on special compilations.

3. The number varies by country. Currently in the US, an album must sell 1 million copies to go platinum. In the past it was lower, but as far as I know, 1M has been the threshold for platinum for quite a while now.

4. A hidden track is one that is not listed on the track listing on the cover of an album, but which does appear on the recording. One of my favorite albums, "Disintegration" by The Cure, has a hidden track. Sometimes they are full songs, and sometimes they are just funny little tid-bits.

5. A concept album is one which has a main unifying theme or which tells a complete story when it is played in full in order. The band Pink Floyd is famous for concept albums, with "The Wall" being especially well known. It is the story of a boy whose father does not return from WWII and how he builds a wall around himself to insulate himself from emotional pain as he grows to manhood.

I hope you get a lot of answers!

1. A single used to be on 7 inch vinyl and played at 45 r.p.m.These days,it can be a CD.
2. A 'b' is the flip of the 'a' side of the single ie."While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was the 'b' side of "Ob La Di,Ob La Dah" by the Beatles and expressed eg "Honky Tonk Women" b/w "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the Stones..Honky Tonk Woman was the A side with You Can't... the B side.
3.Obviously it differs from country to country.. ie. the population of New Zealand or even Australia have Platinum discs but for smaller sales figures..in the larger markets..USA and the UK and Europe I think the numbers are about I million copies..a few.
4. A hidden track is usually tacked onto a CD..at the end..and is not listed on the playlist on the cover.
5."Dark Side Of The Moon"by Pink Floyd is probably the most famous of these....others "H.G.Wells' War of the Worlds" by Jeff Lynn et al,"The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" by Genesis and "Journey To The Centre of the Earth" by Rick Wakeman. There are many, many others.
