I watched this movie again the other night and I thought this song was incredible. I don't remember the composer's name, but I consider this a beautiful example of new classical music. Any opinions?

It isn't a "real" symphony, it is a composition by Michael Kamen. Some people love it some hate it. I think it's pretty good pop music.

No, it's still film music. It is very "poppy" in style.

Examples of new classical music would be Adams "Fearful Symmetries", Ligeti's "Lux Aeterna", Joan Tower's "Sequoia", Glass's "Einstein on the Beach" -- Xenakis, Pendercki, Cage, Stockhausen, Steve Reich ....
all quite different in scope and style that "American Symphony".

See if you can find performances of some of the above works and composers, and google "20th century composers" to see what else is out there. Some of it's good, some of it's not so good.

Happy listening.

I remember playing this my jr year of high school, a yr after the movie (which I own) came out. I'm not sure where my band director found the sheet music, but heres a link to the soundtrack.

It was astonishing to me that Mr. Holland should be allowed to graduate from music school and supposedly guide children in there quest to become incompetent musicians if he couldn't write better than that.
