Country was, is, and will always be about Johnny Cash. The Chesneys, Rascal Flatts, and other current country boy toys can't carry his guitar case.

I was raised on classic country such as Hank Williams, Earl Tubbs, Merle Haggard, Marty Robbins, Freddie Fender, The Kendalls, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson and Waylong Jennings. I still love the old classics and listen to them often but I also love the "new country" such as Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Billy Currington & Leann Rimes. Both genres of music have their pros and cons but in the end I do agree that back "in the day" we liked performers for the quality of their music versus what they looked like.

At least ''Who's your favorite'' is answerable. ''Who's the best ''is impossible and rediculous. There are so many great singers and styles. Patsy Cline came to my mind first but she's not my fav. I dont think I have a fav. My mood and who I want to hear at a peticular time changes constantly as you could probably tell by my CD collection. I'm in a camp working right now and on my way home Wed. I plan on stopping at A+B Sound and ordering ''Back To The Bar Rooms'' by Merle. This will be the third time I've bought this CD! I guess I'm not the only one who likes it... lol

I know what you are talking about. The looks don't really tell anything about how they sound or play. I remember the legends and greats also. Not saying there arent good singers today because there are but I also understand what you are saying.

Some of my favorites are from the past: Tanya Tucker, Conway, Merle, Waylon, etc.

In my opinion, George Strait is an incredible singer & I love all his songs. I've seen him in concert 5 times & every show was great. I've also seen Merle Haggard back in the day & that was a good concert. I understand what you mean about fans drooling over Kenny, Keith & Brad, etc....~~~

I don't really like the question anyway. All personal choice,so really,no such person. As for your other points,I agree. The gym I attend always has one screen showing pop videos, and I often wonder, how many of these artist would have made it on radio talent alone. Unfortunately, everything seems to revolve on looking good and showing your backside. Not that I'm complaining in some instances :)

Okiefan,

You and I are coming from the same place, but your questions seems to be getting a little "amped up".

Don't get yourself overly stressed out over it. Nothing you or I can do to change it. It's not just country, or even just music. It's the culture. it revolves around superficial qualities, money, fame, and a lot of B.S. It's always been a part of human nature, but it's increased in the last 10 years to a fever pitch.
Can you imagine people being interested in Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, etc. twenty or thirty years ago?

I have spent my life listening to, and researching all genres of American "source" music (hate the term roots) including country, jazz, folk, blues, rock & roll, etc. I used to get frustrated like hell, but now I just do what I can. Most of my friends/family/ex's listen mainly to music I turned them on to.
As for the rest--I ignore them, pour myself a drink, and put some MUSIC on the stereo. In fact, I'm listening to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" with Acuff, Mother Maybelle, Jimmy Martin, etc. right now and having my third scotch. Which may explain why I'm rambling on.

Take Care.

I could not agree more. Conway had an absolutely awesome voice. While on that subject I think people have become so caught up in what materialistic bull sh-t (thats all looks really are) they percieve. I live by the saying of yours "if it aint classic it aint country". God Bless all the legends living or departed.

You know who has a really unique voice in classic country? John Conlee. I adore him, but there is NO way i could ever say i have a favorite. I always think about the quality of the music, and i understand what you're saying!!!!
I respect the musician in the man ( or woman) and pay very little attention to the way they look!

I agree with you completely, too many people are obsessed with looks and $$$$$ to even listen to the music.
sad, very sad.
BTW my favorites:
Statlers "Atlanta Blue"
ETC "What I'd Say"
Horton "I'm a 1 Woman Man"
Tammy Wynette "Your Girls Gonna Go Bad"
Haggard "The Fugitive"

my top 5 (not necessarily in that order.)
